In order to reduce inflow/infiltration and backup of sewage into basements during storm flow events, older sections of the City’s collection system that have cross connections between sanitary and stormwater were eliminated. New storm sewer lines were constructed to drain the stormwater directly to the Kanawha River. The separation of the combined sewer system greatly reduced the amount of inflow in the sanitary sewer system and reduced the amount of flow to the wastewater treatment facility. This project also allowed the City to comply with its Long-Term Control Plan (LTCP).
